Little Rock, AR -- The President today made additional assistance available for the Arkansas ice storm recovery by ordering an increase in the federal share of funding for debris removal.

Funding for debris removal ordinarily is cost-shared with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) paying 75 percent of the eligible costs and the state providing the remaining 25 percent. Under the President's order, the federal share has been increased to 90 percent and the nonfederal share reduced to 10 percent of the eligible costs.

"The historic formula in Arkansas is to split the nonfederal share between the state and local governments," said State Coordinating Officer David Maxwell with the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management (ADEM). "The formula remains in effect, with the state paying 5 percent and the local communities paying 5 percent."

The cost-share adjustment is retroactive to Dec. 12, 2000, the date of the ice storms that instigated the President's major disaster declaration for the state. The debris removal must be for damages caused by the ice storms and must be completed by Feb. 27, 2001.

FEMA's housing assistance program continues to be paid at 100 percent federal cost. Grants for individuals and families to help meet other serious disaster-related needs are set by law at 75 percent federal and 25 percent state share.
