The NIH Administrative Data Base (ADB) is an enterprise-wide system that serves the 27 NIH Institutes and Centers and the Office of the Director. ADB provides electronic support for a broad range of NIH financial and administrative business and administrative processes, such as purchasing, receiving and paying for goods and services, tracking service and supply fund activities; and paying NIH Fellows.
Development of the ADB began in 1978 to automate processes related to procuring goods and services and translating procurement actions into accounting transactions that are processed by the Central Accounting System (CAS). Over the years several modules were added to the ADB.
The ADB is in the process of being replaced by the NIH Business System (NBS). Modifications and enhancements to the ADB are made only to reflect changing policies and requirements. The ADB is critical to the daily operations of NIH because of the service it provides to the NIH community. As well as its inherent business and administrative functionality, data from the ADB is captured in the NIH Data Warehouse and used for reporting purposes and trends analysis.
