AUSTIN, Texas -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has obligated a $4.3 million grant to the Chambers-Liberty Counties Navigation District to help pay the costs of repairs to a levee on Lake Anahuac that was damaged during the Hurricane Ike disaster.

The navigation district requested federal assistance after breaches in the levee caused water to flow between the Trinity River Delta and the lake. The latest FEMA award is for additional work to secure the area's freshwater source.

"These funds will help the navigation district make permanent repairs to this vital levee," said Federal Coordinating Officer Brad Harris. "This is an important project for the citizens of the local communities."

FEMA awarded $4,302,299 for materials, labor and heavy equipment needed to make repairs and compact the levee. The federal government is reimbursing 75 percent of the total cost of the project. The remaining 25 percent of the $5,736,399 total is the non-federal share.

Once FEMA forwards the funds to the state of Texas, further management of the funds, including disbursement to organizations performing the services, is the responsibility of the state. The obligated funds are a portion of nearly $774 million in total Public Assistance disaster funds sent to the state since September 2008.

"The repair work associated with these Public Assistance funds will have a direct impact on every Texan in the area," said State Coordinating Officer Joan Haun. "This is federal help at its best."

FEMA responds to all eligible requests for assistance through the Public Assistance program.  For more Public Assistance information by county, go to www.fema.gov/ike and click on the Disaster Statistics button.
