Assistance for Individuals and Households Nears $3 Million

Bismarck, N.D. - Disaster assistance for North Dakotans affected by the floods has reached almost $3 million dollars in grants and loans. Since the April 10th declaration for the Individual Assistance program, more than 2,000 residents have registered with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for assistance, and a steady stream of grant and loan checks go out daily.
Eligible applicants affected by the recent floods beginning March 13 may receive grants to help pay for temporary housing, essential home repairs or other serious disaster-related expenses, such as medical, dental, funeral or burial expenses not covered by insurance or other sources. To date, 1,382 home inspections have been completed throughout the state. The deadline for Individual Assistance registrations in North Dakota is June 9, 2009.
The Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved loans for $131,600 home and business combined. SBA customer service representatives are staffing all Disaster Recovery Centers to answer questions. Additionally, SBA continues to offer specialized help to business owners at the SBA Business Recovery Center in the West Acres Shopping Center (on the main level near the Fountain Entrance by JC Penney), 3902 13th Avenue South, Suite 5237 in Fargo.
Disaster Unemployment Assistance claims have reached $16,816 in checks disbursed to workers affected by the floods and severe storms.
Public Assistance
In addition to the aid for individuals and households, FEMA has obligated $3.5 million in federal funds to the state of North Dakota for local governments and state agencies.
Mission Assignments
FEMA and North Dakota Department Emergency Services have coordinated 118 mission assignments to numerous federal and state agencies to protect property and lives statewide. The total cost to date is $33 million. Some of the agencies enlisted in the emergency response include the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Coast Guard Disaster Assistance Response Teams, the American Red Cross, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
More than 450 FEMA personnel have been deployed from across the nation to North Dakota, plus 122 individuals from supporting agencies.
Disaster Recovery Centers:
Nearly 900 people have visited the seven Disaster Recovery Centers now open throughout North Dakota to find out about their claim status, recovery program information or get help filling out their SBA packet. The Centers’ hours are from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time, Monday through Saturday, and on Sunday, 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. until further notice.
Residents who plan to stop by the DRC are urged to register for assistance before their visit. Residents can register for assistance by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 or visiting www.DisasterAssistance.gov online. The registration line is open daily from 6 a.m. – midnight CDT and 5 a.m. – 11 p.m. MDT until further notice. The call is free.
