Definition A type of cell that covers the inside and outside surfaces of the body. Squamous cells are flat cells that look like fish scales under a microscope. They are found in tissues that form the surface of the skin, the lining of hollow organs (such as the uterus), and passages of the respiratory tract (nose, throat, windpipe, and lungs) and digestive tract (mouth, esophagus, and rectum).
