NSCLC: Improving the Lives of America's Elderly Poor

The National Senior Citizens Law Center advocates before the courts, Congress and federal agencies to promote the independence and well-being of low-income elderly and disabled Americans.

 

Social Security Settlement Could Benefit 100,000+ People and Restore Hundreds of Millions in Benefits

A proposed settlement has been reached in Martinez v. Astrue, No. 08-CV-4735 CW (N.D. Cal.). The settlement will obligate the Social Security Administration to halt procedures which in recent years have caused the unjustified denial or suspension of benefits for tens of thousands of persons. The plaintiffs are represented by NSCLC, the private firm Munger, Tolles & Olson, the Urban Justice Center, Disability Rights California, and the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County. Stimulus Bill thumbOn February 17, 2009, President Barack Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The stimulus bill authorizes $789 billion in new federal spending to, among other things, save or create 3.5 million jobs, reduce taxes for low- or moderate-income households, protect Medicaid beneficiaries from state cuts, and dramatically invest in the nation’s infrastructure.
