Last Disaster Recovery Center In Texas Serving Ike Victims Is Closing

AUSTIN, Texas -- The last FEMA/State Disaster Recovery Center in Texas - one of 130 recovery centers that have served Texans since Hurricane Ike - will close Friday, April 10, in Galveston, reflecting the state's progress in recovering from the disaster.
More than 160,000 visitors visited the recovery centers that have operated in Texas. More than $1.9 billion in state and federal assistance has helped speed recovery from the disaster.
"These 130 recovery centers that operated in Texas have helped thousands move forward in rebuilding their lives," said Brad Harris, federal coordinating officer in Texas for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. "FEMA is continuing in its efforts to help Texas recover from this disaster and is here for the long haul."
The center closing Friday is located at the Galveston Island Community Center at 4700 Broadway in Galveston. The center has served almost 28,000 visitors and has been the busiest recovery center in the state.
"The recovery centers provided much-needed one-on-one assistance to thousands of Texans needing help after the disaster, and the centers have fulfilled their mission," said State Coordinating Officer Joan Haun.
The Galveston center is open 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. until it closes on Friday. Texans who have already applied to FEMA and still need assistance are encouraged to call the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 800 462-7585.
