AUSTIN, Texas -- Texans can easily access daily online information about the Hurricane Ike recovery progress, read a weekly review of recovery efforts by the Federal Emergency Management Agency's top official in Texas, and get other important disaster information by simply visiting a newly designed disaster-specific Web site.
"Texans want to know how the recovery process is going, and FEMA is doing all it can to keep them informed," said Brad Harris, FEMA's federal coordinating officer in Texas. "Daily updates to FEMA's Hurricane Ike Web site are part of our commitment to be transparent about all phases of the recovery."
The Hurricane Ike Web site, at www.fema.gov/ike, includes an interactive map of disaster-affected counties that displays public infrastructure project information and funding for the projects.
The interactive map also gives county-specific data on individual housing grants approved and grants for other disaster-related needs.
Harris also offers a personal update on recovery efforts that will be posted at the beginning of each week. In his first message, FEMA's federal coordinating officer outlines strides in the recovery effort in the nearly six months since Hurricane Ike made landfall.
Downloadable widgets, or data-filled icons, with links to important information about severe weather, disaster preparation and related concerns are also available.
The site also includes webisodes about recovery efforts, a schedule of where FEMA hazard mitigation specialists are located in home improvement stores and the standard links to press releases, fact sheets, radio resources, and detailed explanations about FEMA's programs.
FEMA leads and supports the nation in a risk-based, comprehensive emergency management system of preparedness, protection, response, recovery, and mitigation, to reduce the loss of life and property and protect the nation from all hazards including natural disasters, acts of terrorism and man-made disasters.
