Housing And Other Disaster Assistance In Cherokee County Tops $778,900

AUSTIN, Texas -- More than $778,900 in federal and state grants and low-interest disaster loans has been approved for Cherokee County five months after Hurricane Ike made landfall.
The funds include individual assistance grants for temporary housing, home repairs and other disaster-related needs such as medical and dental costs, personal property, and moving and storage expenses from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) for homeowners, renters and businesses of all sizes.
The FEMA registration deadline is Feb. 20. Homeowners, renters and business owners who suffered damages from Hurricane Ike and have yet to register are urged to do so as soon as possible by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the speech- and hearing-impaired, or by registering online at www.fema.gov.
The following is a summary of activities in Cherokee County as of close of business Feb. 16, 2009:
- More than $604,100 has been approved for housing assistance.
- More than $45,500 has been approved for other disaster-related needs.
- The SBA approved $129,300 in low-interest disaster loans for homeowners, renters and businesses of all sizes.
FEMA leads and supports the nation in a risk-based, comprehensive emergency management system of preparedness, protection, response, recovery, and mitigation, to reduce the loss of life and property and protect the nation from all hazards including natural disasters, acts of terrorism, and other man-made disasters.
