Federal Presence In Nd Still Strong With More Than $10.6 Million In Aid

BISMARCK, N.D . --The federal government’s presence supporting North Dakotans remains strong, as individuals, households, community organizations and public agencies continue to be reached with a variety of programs helping them recover from the severe storms and flooding in mid-March.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has more than 400 recovery personnel deployed to the state, with another 50 from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). North Dakotans may have noticed some of the early responders shifting personnel in some areas since the flood danger has passed in some communities, but all agencies remain watchful as rivers continue at high levels.
Since the disaster was declared, more than $10.6 million has been approved in North Dakota loans or grants to individuals and to state, local and tribal governments and certain private nonprofit organizations suffering damage in the disaster. Here’s a recap as of close of business May 3, by the numbers:
- 3,356 North Dakotans have registered for disaster assistance in the 33 counties designated for Individual Assistance.
- 2,419 home inspections have been completed.
- $3,944,906 has been approved under the Individuals and Households Program (IHP) for temporary housing, essential home repairs and other housing-related expenses not covered by insurance or other sources.
- $130,323 has been approved under the IHP Other Needs Assistance for other serious disaster-related expenses such as medical, dental, funeral or personal property. The state provides 25 percent of ONA funding.
- $51,567 has been disbursed to workers, including the self-employed and farmers and ranchers, whose employment was affected by the disaster.
- $1,137,900 in low-interest disaster loans to homeowners, renters, business of all sizes and private nonprofit organizations has been approved by the SBA.
- $5.41 million in Public Assistance has been obligated to the state of North Dakota for local and state government actions taken in the disaster response. Included in this amount is $1.87 million obligated to the state over the weekend for labor costs incurred by the North Dakota National Guard for emergency aid to communities during the sandbagging and patrol of temporary dikes.
In addition to the $10.6 million described above, FEMA has obligated $19.2 million in 118 Mission Assignments to other federal agencies, including funding for USACE to remove temporary flood protection measures such as temporary levees, sandbags and flood protection products such as Hesco Bastions placed during the response.
There are seven federal/state Disaster Recovery Centers currently operating in North Dakota to help people find out about their registration status, get recovery or mitigation program information, or get help filling out the SBA packets. Locations are:

The North Dakota Department of Emergency Services provides 24/7 emergency communications and resource coordination with more than 50 lead and support agencies, private enterprise, and voluntary organizations to assist local jurisdictions in disaster and emergency response activities.
