Brent Colburn

Brent Colburn was appointed the Director of External Affairs for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on April 14, 2009. 

Colburn brings a wealth of experience to FEMA.  Most recently he served as a national spokesperson for the Presidential Inaugural Committee after working as the Communications Director for the Obama for America Campaign in Michigan.  Prior to joining the campaign, Colburn worked in the Issues & Crisis Practice at Burson-Marsteller Public Relations, providing crisis communications and strategic messaging support to Fortune 500 companies, associations and non-governmental organizations.  Colburn has extensive experience in political and legislative communications, having worked on three presidential campaigns, congressional and statewide campaigns, and in the United States Senate, most recently as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan. 

Colburn holds a Bachelor of Arts in Government and a Masters in Public Policy from the College of William & Mary.

The mission of External Affairs is to maintain visibility of public and internal communications, ensuring accurate and timely messaging to meet the needs of any situation.  The Director serves as an advisor to FEMA program and support offices to ensure all activities are responsive to key agency stakeholders. 

Colburn will be responsible for the seven divisions that comprise External Affairs, including Intergovernmental Affairs, International Affairs, Legislative Affairs, Private Sector Initiatives, Public Affairs, Disaster Operations/Training and Cadre Management, and Resource Management.
