AUSTIN, Texas -- Evacuees from Hurricane Gustav should be aware that if they are currently in a state food stamp program, their Electronic Benefits Card (EBT) may be used in any state.

People who evacuated Louisiana and Mississippi can use their EBT cards in Texas just the same as they did back home.

Louisiana requested and the US Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service approved early issuance of September food stamp benefits this past weekend. This ensured that Louisiana residents evacuating to other states would have benefits on their EBT cards.

"We want people to know that the basic needs provided by state food stamp programs are accessible nationwide to those who are already enrolled in their state program," said Federal Coordinating Officer Sandy Coachman, who leads FEMA's recovery efforts in Texas. "Getting their monthly benefits transferred to them early meant no disruption in this service."

Louisiana food stamp clients who have problems with their EBT card may call the helpline at 1-888-LA-HELP-U (1-888-524-3578).

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
