Overview of the American Recovery
and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act). The American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act) was signed
into law by President Obama on February 17th, 2009. It is an
unprecedented effort to jumpstart our economy, create or save
millions of jobs, and put a down payment on addressing long-neglected
challenges so our country can thrive in the 21st century. The
Act is an extraordinary response to a crisis unlike any since
the Great Depression, and includes measures to modernize our
nation's infrastructure, enhance energy independence, expand
educational opportunities, preserve and improve affordable health
care, provide tax relief, and protect those in greatest need.
NIH-funded institutions are in the process of requesting and
potentially receiving supplements to existing NIH projects
that will be dedicated to supporting these summer research
experiences. When these institutions receive funds, they and/or
their NIH supported investigators will begin posting opportunities.
We know time is short. Please help us spread the word by sharing
information with students and teachers who might be interested.
We will provide additional information about these opportunities
and the best ways to contact grantee institutions on this Web
site as it become available.
Teacher Summer Opportunities just announced — Get
Ready!
We are providing elementary, middle and high school teachers,
as well as college faculty with short term research experiences
at NIH-funded institutions to aid in professional development
and to aid them in fostering a lifelong interest in science for
their students. Teachers will have the opportunity to participate
in laboratory science, be a member of a research team, and/or
learn a state-of-the-art technique in modern biology. We know
time is short, so we are encouraging you to think about potential
opportunities by investigating the NIH funded research programs
in your field of interest using this on-line
map of research institutions with NIH funding (http://report.nih.gov/award/trends/State_Congressional/StateOverview.cfm)
or by searching
NIH funded projects (http://report.nih.gov/crisp/CRISPQuery.aspx)
by topic of interest. Many NIH funded institutions are in the
process of receiving funds dedicated to supporting summer research
experiences for science educators and students. If these institutions
receive these funds they and/or their NIH supported investigators
will begin posting opportunities. Please help us spread the word
by sharing information with students or educators who might be
interested. We will provide additional information on this site
once it becomes available.
