INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Recent storms and flooding in Indiana are a huge reminder that the spring rainy season is fast approaching. This is National Flood Safety Awareness Week and officials urge Hoosiers to take action now to protect life and property.

Floods can happen anywhere. Everyone should have a family emergency plan, a disaster supply kit, and should pay close attention to local and state emergency managers - especially during periods of heavy rain or rapid snow melt. And remember, NEVER drive across flooded roadways. Just a few inches of water can carry away your car.

To learn more about flood safety and preparedness go to www.fema.gov - under "Types of Disasters," click on "Flood." Here you will find a wealth of vital information to help you safeguard your loved ones.

Flood insurance is the best way to protect yourself and your family from the financial impact of a flood. Did you know that most homeowner's insurance doesn't cover flood damage? Coverage is available through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and can be purchased through private insurance firms. To find an agent near you, go to www.FloodSmart.gov and click on "Agent Locator."

Just because you don't live in a high risk area doesn't mean you shouldn't consider buying an NFIP flood policy. A very big percentage of all flooding occurs every year in lower-risk areas.  Flood insurance is available to anyone living in a community that participates in the National Flood Insurance Program. If your community doesn't participate in NFIP, ask your local officials "why not?"

FEMA leads and supports the nation in a risk-based, comprehensive emergency management system of preparedness, protection, response, recovery, and mitigation, to reduce the loss of life and property and protect the nation from all hazards including natural disasters, acts of terrorism, and other man-made disasters.
