FEMA And State Schedule Briefings For Local Officials In Maines Flood-Declared Counties

PORTLAND, Maine -- Briefings have been scheduled for local officials in Maine to explain how to apply for federal disaster aid in the wake of flooding in 11 counties between March 29 and May 3, 2005. The schedule is listed below.
Officials from the Maine Emergency Agency (MEMA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said the briefing and kickoff meetings with local governments and state agencies will help them identify projects eligible for reimbursement through FEMA’s Public Assistance progra.m.. The applicants have 30 days to apply for assistance.
“These briefings are designed to help local officials understand eligibility requirements and the reimbursement process,” Arthur W. Cleaves, state coordinating officer said.
With the Presidential emergency declaration, local governments in the declared counties may apply for federal assistance to fund 75 percent of total eligible costs in seven categories including:
- Emergency debris removal costs
- Emergency protective measures
- Road systems
- Water control facilities
- Buildings and equip.m.ent
- Public utilities
- Recreation and other facilities
Officials stressed the importance of record keeping in this type of declaration where federal funds will reimburse specific local costs. “Having accurate, well-documented time records for equip.m.ent and personnel will speed up the reimbursement process,” said Philip L. Parr, acting federal coordinating officer.
Government entities eligible to participate include state agencies, local governments, public utilities and eligible private non-profit organizations.
