FEMA Snow Emergency Grants Near $3.5 Million

LAS VEGAS, Nev -- The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today it has obligated $1,587,555.12 in Public Assistance Program funds to reimburse state, county, local governments and certain non-profit organizations for losses suffered from the record and near record snow falls of December 29, 2004-January 2, 2005 and January 6-10, 2005.

December 29, 2004-January 2, 2005 Snow Emergency:
Nevada Department of Transportation: $602,351.78
City of Reno: $220,142.66
Washoe County School District: $72,178.46

January 6-10, 2005 Snow Emergency:
Nevada Department of Transportation, $692,882.22

“Under the emergency declarations, FEMA reimbursed state and local governmental agencies and critical nonprofits for 75 percent of the total eligible costs of equipment, contracts and personnel overtime related to emergency services in dealing with the snow over a 72-hour period,” said Philip E. Parr, federal coordinating officer. “These are crucial hours when work crews clear snow from emergency routes and roads to critical facilities to permit the passage of emergency vehicles.”

Frank Siracusa, director of the Nevada Division of Emergency Management and state coordinating officer said, “To date, FEMA has reimbursed eligible state, county, city and private nonprofit organizations $3,491,375.36 for snow emergency costs. FEMA’s Public Assistance Program has proven vital to the people of Nevada.”

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and effectively manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
