Emergency Snow Aid Authorized For Maine Christmas Storm Response

WASHINGTON - The head of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today that federal disaster funds have been made available for Maine to supplement the emergency response to the record snowstorm from December 25-27, 2005.
FEMA Acting Director R. David Paulison said President Bush ordered federal funding for state and eligible local governments in Aroostook County.
Assistance is available to State and eligible local governments on a cost-sharing basis for emergency protective measures that were undertaken to save lives and protect public health, safety and property over a continuous 48 hour period during or approximate to the incident period.
Paulison named Peter J. Martinasco of FEMA to coordinate the federal assistance in the affected area.
FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
