The Deputy Director assists the NIEHS director in the formulation and implementation of plans and policies necessary to carry out the missions of the NIEHS and the National Toxicology Program (NTP). The deputy director works with the director in the administrative management of the NIEHS and NTP, speaks on behalf of the Institute as appropriate, and represents the director in his absence or as designated. Kleeberger, Ph.D., was recruited to NIEHS in 2002 to become Chief of the Laboratory of Respiratory Biology and Principle Investigator of the Environmental Genetics Group. He has distinguished himself as a top-notch researcher of gene-environment interaction in the pathogenesis of environmental lung disease, and in 2006 he received the NIEHS Director’s Challenge Award to lead an interdisciplinary team in translating this research to applications in human health. In 2008, he also received the NIH Director’s Service Award. Prior to joining NIEHS, Dr. Kleeberger was a full professor of environmental health sciences at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Currently, he holds several Adjunct Professorships including Duke University School of Medicine and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Schools of Medicine and Public Health. He has published more than 130 peer-reviewed articles in leading biomedical journals as well as two dozen book chapters and invited reviews. He is a reviewer for more than 20 journals, and has held a number of editorial board positions including Pharmacogenetics and The American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. From 2006 to 2008, Dr. Kleeberger served as Deputy Editor for Environmental Health Perspectives, and continues to serve on the EHP advisory board. He has given more than 100 invited lectures in the United States, Europe, Asia and South America. He has been president of the Inhalation Specialty Section of the Society of Toxicology, and serves on multiple study sections at the National Institutes of Health, international advisory committees on genetic susceptibility, and Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC) Review Panels. He earned his A.B. in zoology at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and his Ph.D. in ecology and environmental physiology at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio.
