Hackberry Disaster Recovery Center to Close

BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) in Cameron Parish, located at 986 Main Street in Hackberry, will close on Saturday March 18, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness announced today.

"This DRC has served more than 1,500 applicants since it opened on Dec. 7, 2005." said Federal Coordinating Officer Scott Wells. "As relief and recovery efforts continue in Louisiana, closing this DRC will enable us to focus our resources to assist the maximum number of people."

Applicants may also access information by calling the Helpline at 1-800-621-3362. Hearing-or speech- impaired individuals may register by calling 1-800-462-7585. The Hackberry DRC will operate from from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until it closes on March 18.

A list of all DRCs still operating is attached.

Representatives of state, federal, as well as customer service representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration, are on hand to answer questions and provide recovery information. No cash, checks, debit cards or vouchers are distributed at Disaster Recovery Centers. These centers are for the dissemination of information to assist in victim recovery. Written materials about various state and federal programs are also available to individuals and business owners.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
