BATON ROUGE, La. -- Louisiana residents will benefit from workshops designed to protect homes against future hurricanes. The workshops, offered free by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in partnership with home improvement centers, will discuss building techniques to make homes more hurricane resistant.

“These workshops, led by FEMA mitigation experts, will discuss the two critical areas of wind and flood hazards,” said Scott Wells, the federal coordinating officer. “Everyone is invited and we urge everyone to attend, including homeowners, building contractors, architects.”

Two initial workshops will be held:

JANUARY 20, 2006
Slidell

8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

84 Lumber Company
394 Voters Road
Slidell, LA 70461

JANUARY 23, 2006
St. Rose

8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Home ownership will continue to be the largest lifetime investment for residents. Rebuilding properly with the best technical guidance and using tested techniques will assure that homes will be fortified against and more resistant to hurricane forces.

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program.
