Two More Disaster Recovery Centers Begin Operations

Baton Rouge, La. -- The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the State of Louisiana Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness (LOHSEP) officials announce the opening of two more Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) in Webster Parish and Plaquemines Parish. This brings the number of centers now open to assist Louisiana victims of Hurricane Katrina to seven. The new centers are opening on Wednesday, Sept.14.

Victims of the hurricane are urged to register for assistance first by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). The TTY number is 1 800 462 7585 for those who are speech- or hearing-impaired.

Six centers are open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week until further notice. The Plaquemines Parish center is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., due to local curfews. An applicant may visit any one of the seven DRCs. A list of DRCs is on page 2.

Representatives of state, federal, and voluntary agencies, as well as loan officers from the U.S. Small Business Administration, will be on hand to answer questions and provide recovery information. Written materials about various assistance programs are also available to individuals and business owners.

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003
