Building A Hurricane Proof House Activity

What do you get when you combine a leaf blower, construction paper, straws and tape? Leon High School science students building Hurricane Proof Houses!

The leaf blower blows on simply built "houses" to test their resistance. Some withstood the test of the wind and some were destroyed. It was all in the name of learning and science as the students learned about the force of hurricane winds and construction designs that make houses more durable during strong winds.

Developed by Gary Botts, Disaster Resistant Neighborhood Coordinator for the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, the activity plans can be found at: http://www.tallytown.com/redcross/hurrproof.html
