Director, Division of Extramural Research, National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM)

National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Department of Health and Human Services

Deadline: June 30, 2009

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Director, Division of Extramural Research (DER), National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). The NCCAM is dedicated to exploring complementary and alternative healing practices in the context of rigorous science; training and career development in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) research; and dissemination of authoritative evidence-based information on CAM practices to the public and health professionals.

The Division of Extramural Research is the largest organizational unit and budgetary component of NCCAM. It oversees a broad range of NCCAM-funded extramural research and career development activities. Reporting directly to the NCCAM Director, the Division Director is a principal scientific advisor to the NCCAM Director, serves as the primary NCCAM spokesperson on extramural research, and is a member of the Center's executive staff. Thus, the Division Director plays a central role in framing the national agenda for CAM research.

Responsibilities include scientific and managerial leadership in planning, implementing, and evaluating NCCAM's extramural research and career development programs, more than half of which involve clinical trials and clinical research, supported through grants, cooperative agreements, and contracts. Employing a broad strategic vision, the Division Director advances NCCAM's mission by identifying new research directions, priorities, and initiatives, and by seeking and developing partnership opportunities with other national and international organizations and agencies, the media, and advocacy groups. The Division Director manages a staff of scientific professionals, maintains a productive work environment, and fosters workplace diversity. For information on NCCAM's programs, applicants may browse the NCCAM website.

Applicants must possess an M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent degree in a professional field related to the mission of NCCAM; a professional background reflecting both a broad base of scientific knowledge and experience which includes clinical investigation; demonstrated capability to plan, implement, and direct research projects or programs of national and international importance; and the ability to communicate with and obtain the cooperation of national and international organizations and individuals who represent wide-ranging views and competing priorities. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Full Federal benefits include leave, health and life insurance, long-term care insurance, retirement, and a savings plan (401k equivalent).

Qualified individuals are encouraged to submit their CV, bibliography, a list of three references, and a 3-page cover letter addressing:

  1. your reasons for being interested in this position;
  2. how your training and experience would assist NCCAM in helping to "bridge" and integrate CAM and conventional research, and promote the practice of evidence-based integrative health care;
  3. how your training and/or experience in overseeing clinical research projects or programs would contribute to NCCAM's efforts to shape and oversee its extremely diverse extramural portfolio; and
  4. your goals for and approaches to interacting with the diverse community of NCCAM stakeholders, including both members of the CAM professions (e.g., acupuncture and oriental medicine, chiropractic, mind-body practices, etc.), and the broader scientific community.
