Frequently Asked Questions

- I have been the director of a sub-project (but not the PI) on a multi-component NIH program project or center grant. Can I still check the “yes” in the New Investigator box when I apply for an R01?
- I have been the PI on a substantial independent research grant from the National Science Foundation (or some other public or private, foreign or domestic research agency), but I’ve never received any significant research support from the NIH. Can I still check the “yes” in the New Investigator box when I apply for an R01?
- I was assigned to lead a research project as the Principal Investigator during the non-competing phase of an NIH R01 grant because the previous PI became disabled. Can I still check the “yes” in the New Investigator box when I apply for an R01?
- Based on the forgoing, I plan to check “yes” in the New Investigator box even though I have been the PI on a substantial independent research grant from the National Science Foundation (or some other non-NIH, public or private, foreign or domestic research agency). Does that mean that my application will receive special consideration during review or when applications are selected for funding?

Yes. Only those who have previously competed successfully as PI for a significant independent NIH research grant are excluded from consideration as a New Investigator.

All aspects of your application including your identification as a New NIH Investigator and your previous research experience will be considered by the peer review committee as it assesses the scientific merit of your proposal. The assigned NIH Institute or Center will consider the recommendations of the peer review committee as well as the recommendations from the appropriate advisory council along with overall program balance and other factors when selecting applications for award.
