NEW ORLEANS, La. -- With the cold weather approaching, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) encourages all occupants living in travel trailers and mobile homes to stay warm and safe.

"We want every occupant to be comfortable and safe this winter. Occupants living in travel trailers and mobile homes should practice fire safety at all times," said Rafael Roman, Individual Assistance branch chief. "The use of improper equipment can cause serious injuries or fatal carbon monoxide buildup."

To ensure the safety of all residents, here are some safety prevention tips to follow:

If an occupant feels their health or safety is in danger, they should leave immediately and contact emergency officials. For maintenance or repairs, trailer residents should call 1-888-294-2822 Monday through Saturday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
