LSU Dentistry School Receives Over $1 Million In FEMA Funds

NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The LSU School of Dentistry in New Orleans will soon have completely repaired administration building critical med systems with the help of reimbursement funds recently obligated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for the work needed after Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005.
When projects are obligated by FEMA, the funds are transferred to a Smartlink account. This allows the state to work with the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness as quickly as possible to access the monies and distribute them to the local applicants. The state may require additional documentation from the applicant before disbursals are made.
Over nine feet of water inundated the Florida Avenue building after the storm, causing extensive damage to all of its HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems. These latest funds, totaling over $1.3 million, will reimburse the state for work to be performed at the administrative building that includes new fans, air conditioning units, insulation, water coolers, intercom and PA systems and handicap access buttons, among other.
“Schools and universities are an integral part of this city’s infrastructure,” said James Stark, director of the Louisiana Transitional Recovery Office. “FEMA is proud to work with LSU’s dentistry school so that it can once again concentrate on what it does best – training the dentists of tomorrow.”
The administration building, built in 1971, is a four-story facility that consists of over 72,000 square feet and includes a basement.
The Public Assistance program works with state and local officials to fund recovery measures and the rebuilding of government and certain private nonprofit organizations’ buildings and recreation centers, as well as roads, bridges and water and sewer plants. In order for the process to be successful, federal, state and local partners coordinate to draw up project plans, fund these projects and oversee their completion.
FEMA coordinates the federal government’s role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
