NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recently awarded 16 maintenance and deactivation contracts for Louisiana’s travel trailer and mobile home program.

The 16 new contractors will conduct maintenance on occupied trailers as well as remove units when families are finished using them. The new contractors are phasing-in under FEMA’s three main installation contractors to learn the processes, define their areas of responsibility and make a smooth transition.

“While housing people is still our first priority, we realize that some of those we have already housed are finishing up repairs to their homes and moving on with their lives,” said James Stark, acting director of FEMA’s Louisiana Transitional Recovery Office. “We appreciate patience as we work to get our new contractors trained, and we anticipate they will be operational in the near future.”

If you have a travel trailer or mobile home and no longer need it, call the FEMA Trailer Hotline at 1-888-294-2822 and request to have the unit removed. The travel trailer or mobile home should be presented in good condition, with all personal property removed. Before the trailer or mobile home is removed, residents will be contacted to complete a move-out inspection and to return the keys.

Once trailers are removed, they are brought back to FEMA staging areas where they are cleaned and refurbished before being sent out for use by another family.

While occupying FEMA travel trailers or mobile homes, residents are responsible for maintaining the unit by keeping it clean, changing light bulbs and smoke detector batteries, and making sure propane fuel tanks are refilled.

Travel trailers and mobile homes will be inspected for occupant safety once a month by the contractors. If a unit requires maintenance beyond basic upkeep, residents should call the travel trailer maintenance number they were given when they moved in. Residents may call the FEMA Trailer Hotline 1-888-294-2822 to obtain the phone number for the FEMA trailer maintenance contractor who works in their parish.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
