BATON ROUGE, La. -- In early March, when they leave their ports, the commercial ships that provided emergency housing for victims of Hurricane Katrina will have completed their vital mission.

Contracts with the Sensation and Ecstasy ships end on March 1, 2006. They have other obligations and are being returned to their commercial owners for repairs and maintenance. For the past six months, these vessels have provided an enormous service to those most affected by Hurricane Katrina.

FEMA housing representatives are assisting all ship residents to relocate to new housing. New Orleans police and fire officials will be housed in new travel trailers or apartment units. When necessary, FEMA will contract with local apartment properties in an innovative program to secure available units at fair market value for the first responders. This program may then be expanded to provide additional living spaces for eligible Katrina evacuees.

This week in Louisiana : At the close of business on Feb. 25, there were: 45,688 travel trailers and mobile homes on private, industrial, group and commercial sites occupied; 1,428 cabins of three cruise ships occupied; and 3,010 federal housing resources provided by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) occupied.
