FEMA Approves $42.7 Million in Public Assistance Funds for Louisiana

BATON ROUGE, La. -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recently approved seven Public Assistance projects totaling $42.7 million. The projects include funds for debris removal, infrastructure repairs and reimbursement for emergency services provided by communities in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

"To date, FEMA has provided more than $1.35 billion in Public Assistance funding to communities throughout Louisiana as the recovery process continues," said Federal Coordinating Officer Scott Wells. "These projects are part of FEMA's continued commitment to working with state and local officials to assist them with unmet needs."

Recipient Funding* Description
Beauregard Electric Cooperative $19,269,300.86 With 1,279 electric poles broken, and 756 pole line transformers damaged by Hurricane Rita, this grant reimburses Beauregard Electric Cooperative applicant for labor, equipment and material costs to restore electricity to cooperative members.
St. Margaret's Daughters' Home $5,500,000 With four to six feet of water throughout this assisted living facility in New Orleans, the building was determined to be unusable. This grant will enable St. Margaret's to purchase Baywater Hospital so they can continue providing their essential services.
Plaquemines Parish Sheriff $5,100,000 Hurricane Katrina caused extensive damage to homes and housing structures throughout Plaquemines Parish. This grant provides the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff with travel trailer housing for essential parish personnel.
Valley Electric Membership Corporation $4,401,647.24 Hurricane Rita severely damaged power infrastructure owned by the Valley Electric Membership Corporation, which serves residents in Caddo, DeSoto, Grant, Natchitoches, Red River, Sabine, Vernon and Winn Parishes. These funds will help restore the electrical distribution system.
St. Bernard Parish $3,447,262.50 Debris removal operations
Calcasieu Parish Police Jury $3,049,393.25 Hurricane Rita caused extensive damage in Calcasieu Parish, including broken branches and downed trees. These branches and trees caused an immediate threat to public safety where they were blocking parish roads. These funds reimburse the parish for the costs of cutting 20,820 trees that were leaning, falling or had hanging limbs.
City of Lake Charles $1,961,056.30 This grant is for emergency response activities conducted by the City of Lake Charles in the aftermath of Hurricane Rita.

FEMA will continue to provide Public Assistance funds to communities throughout Louisiana as projects are reviewed and approved. Funding is provided to communities based on need and FEMA guidelines.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
