FEMA transitions from emergency sheltering to long-term housing assistance

BATON ROUGE, La. -- As the nation's largest post-hurricane emergency sheltering operation winds down, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has provided more than 770,000 families displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita with longer-term housing assistance.
For families remaining in the FEMA hotel/motel emergency sheltering program nationwide, an authorization code program was implemented in early January. The authorization code program enabled FEMA to work more closely with families to help provide them with rental assistance or educate them on alternative housing options before their hotel subsidy ends.
FEMA-subsidized hotel rooms for many will end February 13 or March 1 , a minimum of two weeks after occupants received rental assistance from FEMA or referrals to other services.
Applicants are also being advised to accept the housing options provided to them. If they decline to accept housing provided; accommodations may not be available at the expiration of their lodging. Applicants will become responsible for their own accommodations, utilizing funds they received from FEMA, until their private or commercial trailer site becomes available.
This week in Louisiana: At the close of business on Feb. 11 there were: 39,263 travel trailers and mobile homes on private, industry, group and commercial sites occupied; 1,957 units on cruise ships occupied; and 3,010 units of federal housing provided by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) occupied.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003 .
