Seven New Disaster Recovery Centers To Open

BATON ROUGE, La. -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Louisiana Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (LOHSEP) will open seven new Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005.

The six centers below will be open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week until further notice.

In addition, a Mobile Disaster Recovery Center (MDRC), will also open on Wednesday with normal operating hours of (9 a.m. to 7 p.m.) until further notice.

There are now forty-two Disaster Recovery Centers open in Louisiana to serve the needs of Hurricane Katrina and Rita victims. Plaquemines Parish (open 8 a. m. to 6 p. m.) is operating on adjusted hours to accommodate a local curfew.

Victims of the hurricanes are urged to register for assistance first by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or logging on to www.fema.gov. The TTY number is 1-800-462-7585 for people who are speech- or hearing-impaired. People without telephones or Internet access can use these services for FEMA registration at any of the DRCs located across the state. After applying, those who have questions may meet face-to-face with recovery specialists.

Representatives of state, federal, and voluntary agencies, as well as Customer Service Representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Office of Disaster Assistance, will be on hand to answer questions and provide recovery information. No cash, checks, debit cards or vouchers are distributed at Disaster Recovery Centers. These centers are for the dissemination of information to assist in victim recovery. Written materials about various assistance programs are also available to individuals and business owners.
