LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- State and federal officials agree that one of the most important parts of this recovery process is reaching out with important recovery information to those in Miller, Polk and Sevier counties who have been affected by the severe storms and tornadoes of April 9.

Community Relations (CR) teams from the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management (ADEM) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are reaching out to residents and businesses in disaster-affected counties. Thus far, CR teams have been to more than 700 homes, talked with more than 500 residents, and visited more than 100 businesses. In addition, flyers with important recovery information have been distributed to community or faith-based organizations, churches, and at local community events.

CR specialists not only share disaster recovery information with county residents, businesses, religious organizations, and volunteer agencies, these teams also strive to identify people who may require specialized assistance, especially the elderly and the disabled. Teams work closely with community leaders and special needs advocacy groups to assure that those with special needs are connected with appropriate agencies and services.

Team members are identifiable by FEMA and ADEM logos on clothing and all display official photo identification.

CR teams continue to encourage disaster-affected residents to register with FEMA by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for those with a speech- or hearing-impairment. Toll-free registration lines are open daily from 8 a.m. to midnight. Online is also available at www.fema.gov or www.disasterassistance.gov.

FEMA leads and supports the nation in a risk-based, comprehensive emergency management system of preparedness, protection, response, recovery, and mitigation, to reduce the loss of life and property and protect the nation from all hazards including natural disasters, acts of terrorism and man-made disasters.
