MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- DeKalb County is now eligible for federal assistance with its recovery from severe weather and flooding dating back to March 25, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

With the addition, state and local governments as well as certain private non-profit organizations in      21 Alabama counties are now eligible for help from FEMA’s Public Assistance (PA) program.

The previously approved counties are Baldwin, Bullock, Butler, Choctaw, Clarke, Coffee, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Dallas, Elmore, Geneva, Henry, Houston, Lamar, Marengo, Perry, Russell, Washington, and Wilcox.

PA provides grants, on a cost-sharing basis, to help rebuild public infrastructure damage from the storms and flooding.  Grants help pay for emergency protective measures such as police overtime, debris removal from public roads and rights-of-way, and permanent repairs to roads, bridges and public buildings.

Generally, the grant covers 75 percent of the approved eligible cost.

FEMA leads and supports the nation in a risk-based, comprehensive emergency management system of preparedness, protection, response, recovery, and mitigation, to reduce the loss of life and property and protect the nation from all hazards including natural disasters, acts of terrorism, and other man-made disasters.
