April 28, 2009 - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm said that the 25 Michigan Works! Agencies will receive $136.2 million in Workforce Investment Act (WIA) funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act) that will increase targeted education, training, and job placement services for Michigan workers.
"This funding will help more Michigan citizens receive the training they need to get and succeed in good-paying jobs," Granholm said. "Having a highly skilled and educated workforce is critical to our efforts to diversify the state's economy."
The funded programs include: the WIA Adult Program at $26,229,028; the WIA Dislocated Worker Program at $47,071,228; and the WIA Youth Program at $62,857,067.
The Recovery Act provides funding intended to preserve and create jobs, promote economic recovery, and assist those most impacted by the current economy through the utilization of our state's workforce development system. The WIA Adult and Dislocated Worker programs help increase the employment, job retention, and earnings of participants through activities such as skills upgrading, on-the-job training, and job placement assistance. The WIA Youth program provides summer work experience in addition to promoting youth leadership development and citizenship through voluntary community service opportunities, adult mentoring and follow-up and targeted opportunities for youth living in high poverty areas.
Funding for the federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Adult, Dislocated Worker, and Youth programs is through the U.S. Department of Labor and administered by the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth (DELEG). A table is attached with the funding amounts for each Michigan Works! Agency. To view an interactive map of the state's 25 Michigan Works! Agencies, and associated counties in each region, please visit: www.michiganworks.org.
The Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth (DELEG) is investing in Michigan's future by preparing for the new energy economy, helping to create the jobs of today and tomorrow, ensuring that our children and adults have the skills these jobs demand, making Michigan a better place to do business, and training and placing those who need jobs now.
