Kentucky At Work is the Commonwealth’s implementation of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), signed into law by President Barack Obama and estimated to bring $3 billion in stimulus funding from the federal government to be invested in Kentucky over the next 28 months. ARRA will provide a much-needed, one-time infusion of dollars that will allow us to maintain our jobs and quality of life through investments in education, health care and public safety; and to make strategic investments now to position Kentucky for the future.
The principles that guide us on implementation of ARRA must reflect that we cannot retreat in our commitment to vital areas like education, health care, economic development and public safety. At the same time, building roads, bridges, water and sewer lines, as well as new energy programs and health initiatives, will not only create jobs but also enhance the infrastructure that makes future development possible.
During these extraordinary times, while many of the details of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act are still being determined both on the federal and state level, accountability and transparency are key priorities. These are tax dollars and the public deserves to know how their money is being spent. That is why I have created an inter-agency workgroup, led by Executive Cabinet Secretary Larry Hayes, to ensure we are going after every possible dollar and spending every dollar wisely.
Continuing my administration’s tradition of transparency and openness, our Kentucky At Work website will provide Kentuckians with detailed information on our use of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding. The Recovery Act signed into law by President Obama on February 17th, 2009 includes measures to modernize our nation's infrastructure, enhance energy independence, expand educational opportunities, preserve and improve affordable health care, provide tax relief, and protect those in greatest need.
