Program Description:

Prevention and Wellness Fund Grants for immunization and vaccines; hospital infection control; and evidence based clinical and community based prevention strategies.

For immunization, expected to be $7.3 million for New York State and $5.4 million for New York City.


Unknown for hospital infection control and evidence based clinical and community based prevention strategies.

Entities Eligible to Apply:

For immunization and vaccines, 64 existing Section 317 categorical grant projects may be eligible.


For community–based funds, unknown; but, CDC may retain some for Federal projects and/or add to existing cooperative agreements with states or other agencies and organizations, who may, in turn, dedicate funds to their own programs or to community programs through existing contracts or new procurements.


Unknown for hospital infection control and evidence based clinical and community based prevention strategies.

Flow of Funds:

Of the $300 million for immunizations and vaccines:

  • $32 million for CDC’s internal use
  • $200 million for vaccine purchase
  • $50 million for states’ operation of immunization and vaccine programs (non–competitive)
  • $23 million for states to compete for immunization and vaccine–related activities.
  • $650 million to CDC to develop community–based prevention and wellness strategies to address chronic disease rates
  • $50 million for hospital infection control to:
  • CDC for surveillance, education, and outreach
  • Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for ambulatory care–related programs
  • Agency for Health Quality Research (AHQR) for research on effective prevention models.
  • HHS has 90 days (mid–May) to present a detailed plan to Congress.
