Printed and Unprinted Hearings
In the Spring of 1996 the editor asked his contacts in the Senate, "How
many of the hearings held by Senate Committees are not printed?"
The answer was not known. We asked a reporter who covers the Senate the
same question, and he replied that he thought that all hearings were printed
by the Government Printing Office.
So it might be in a perfect world. In fact, not all hearings result in
the printing of transcripts by the Government Printing Office which are then
made available to the public.
Only a few hearings from the 104th Congress made their way onto the World
Wide Web in electronic format. Since then many more hearings have been
made available via the Internet. But the pattern remains the same - not
all hearing transcripts are provided to the American public.
The results of an ongoing investigation into the question posed above are
presented here.
