U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings today announced 78 school districts across the country would receive the Improving Literacy Through School Libraries Grant to improve students' reading achievement. A total of $19 million will be awarded to 26 states and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands this year.

"The knowledge we get from books enriches our lives and the knowledge of how to read is the building block for success in life," said Secretary Spellings. "In today's world it is more important than ever to have this foundation, and these grants will help more children master this critical skill."

The Improving Literacy Through School Libraries program provides funds to help schools improve their library media and address the reading and other literacy challenges of their students. Funds can be used to increase library holdings, improve schools' technological resources and capabilities, facilitate Internet links and other resource-sharing networks, enhance professional development opportunities and expand hours of access to library services. This program will help improve student reading achievement by focusing on available resources to ensure that no child is left behind.
