Louisiana Lawyer Named Deputy General Counsel for Departmental and Legislative Service at the U.S. Department of Education

U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings named Robert S. Eitel as Deputy General Counsel for Departmental and Legislative Service effective immediately. In this post, he supervises the Division of Business and Administrative Law and the Legislative Counsel Division of the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C.

"Bob's experience in employment law, personnel issues, Freedom of Information Act matters, student privacy rights, and commercial disputes makes him an excellent choice for the position," said Secretary Spellings. "Bob is a dedicated member of our team and I look forward to our continued work together."

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Eitel served as Senior Counsel to the General Counsel of the Department. A long-time resident of Slidell, Louisiana, Mr. Eitel handled employment, commercial, and tort litigation in New Orleans, Louisiana before joining the Office of the General Counsel in October of 2005.

Mr. Eitel graduated in 1982 from Benjamin Franklin Senior High School in New Orleans, a 2003 No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Award School. He studied international politics, strategic studies, and British government at the London School of Economics and Political Science and graduated cum laude from Georgetown University with a B.A. in History in 1986. Mr. Eitel graduated cum laude from Tulane University School of Law in 1990. He is a member of the Bar of Louisiana.
