The Arizona Partnership In Character Education provides a unique arrangement between formal and non-formal educational entities. The project involves an Arizona Educational Consortium composed of the state education agency, local education agencies (LEAs), the University of Arizona 4-H Youth Development Program, and the Governor's Commission on CHARACTER COUNTS!. Together they will deliver a program based upon the six pillars of character, which include: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. The local LEAs include the Yuma County Superintendent's Office; the Gilbert School District, Maricopa County; the Sahuarita School District, Pima County; the Payson School District, Gila County; the Alhambra School District, Maricopa County; and the Graham County School Superintendent's Office. A potential of over 43,000 students can be reached over a three-year period of time with character education curricula. The project has the enthusiastic support of Governor Jane D. Hull, the Governor's CHARACTER COUNTS! Commission, Congressman Shattuck, and Mayor Cynthia Dunham of Gilbert. The project reflects the diversity of Arizona through models that can be replicated by other communities. Community partnerships will be fostered through the program character education project strategies. Training and material will be provided through a variety of media. Long-term sustainability will be pursued with community partnerships, and evaluation tools will be developed to assess these and future statewide character education efforts.
