Dauphin Island, AL Post Office Temporarily Closed

High Water From Hurricane Ike’s Storm Surge Impedes Access

BIRMINGHAM, AL—Alabama District Officials closed the Dauphin Island Post Office at 8:45 a.m. for the remainder of the day.  Due to the impending storm surge of Hurricane Ike, water is washing over the causeway leading from the mainland to the only bridge that provides vehicular access to the Island.  High tide is predicted for 10:00 a.m., which will further increase water levels.  Authorities are in the process of closing down the causeway and have advised everyone to vacate the Island unless they are a resident or have plans to spend the night.

There will be no street delivery today, and while some of the Post Office Box mail had been boxed, it will also be necessary to lock the lobby access due to possible storm conditions.  A notice has been placed on the door for customers.

Officials continue to monitor other nearby offices whose delivery and operations may also be affected.  These include Bayou la Batre, Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, and Coden.  Those Post Offices are open and operating as usual, but employees could be forced to curtail delivery to certain areas where high water presents a risk to them, their vehicle, or the mail.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation — 146 million homes and businesses. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
