TSA Prepared for Ike

Two weeks after the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) prepared for evacuations of the Gulf Coast ahead of Hurricane Gustav, TSA officers and staff have mobilized to respond to Hurricane Ike. Currently, more than 370 Transportation Security Officers and TSA staff have deployed to coastal airports including Houston Hobby and George Bush Intercontinental Airport..
The deployed security officers have assisted evacuation efforts at affected airports and have relieved local employees so that they can safely evacuate themselves and their families out of the storm's path. TSA employees have also moved critical assets to the area and will be in place to re-establish airport operations after the hurricane makes landfall. TSA is working closely with airports and airlines to ensure a safe return to airport operations when possible. TSA also continues to monitor possible operational impacts at airports beyond the Houston area that may be affected by the storm and will put necessary plans in place to ensure smooth security operations.
In response to Hurricane Gustav, TSA officers successfully screened more than 32,000 Gulf Coast residents within a 48-hour period. These special deployment teams were created in response to Hurricane Katrina and are used to respond to national disasters and large events including the Democratic and Republican national conventions.
