Statement of Federal Coordinator Douglas O'Dell

Release Date: January 16, 2009

For Immediate Release
Contact: Rebecca S. Cotton, 202-325-0197

Today’s signing of the financial agreements between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the State of Louisiana through the Coastal Restoration and Protection Agency (CPRA) memorializes the promise of President Bush to allow the state to pay its share of the cost (approximately $1.8 billion) of 100-year hurricane protection in New Orleans over 30 years. I very much appreciate the work of Governor Bobby Jindal on the behalf of the citizens of Louisiana to move this agreement forward.

As a result of this unprecedented decision, the Corps will be able to keep moving toward its 2011 completion goal without delay and the state will have the financial flexibility to engage it other recovery projects and fund critical coastal restoration projects.

This day is a testament to the President’s commitment to rebuilding the levees stronger and better by 2011, but also his overall commitment to a full recovery for the New Orleans area.  I am proud of the work of our staff in helping to make this day a reality.

The Office of the Federal Coordinator for Gulf Coast Rebuilding has been engaged in facilitating and streamlining the recovery effort, providing key federal support and resources to state and local leaders, as well as reinforcing the federal government’s commitment to the people of the Gulf Coast.
