Supplemental Services: Helping All Students Achieve - Tuesday, October 19, 2004

Time: 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM ET
Description Where To Watch Show Resources

“No Child Left Behind … enables students in need to obtain tutoring and mentors. It is already improving quality and performance. It is our best hope for giving every child, every single one, a quality education.”
- Secretary Rod Paige

Because all mothers and fathers want their children to receive a quality education, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 gives parents new access to important and timely information about the quality of the schools their children attend. The law also provides a range of options and resources if those school s are not performing well. In this new era of education, children will no longer be trapped in schools found to be in need of improvement.

No Child Left Behind’s “supplemental educational services” provisions give low-income children access to additional academic help when their states determine that their schools need to improve. With supplemental services, children in these schools can receive the same types of tutoring, remedial education, extra classes or other programs that their more advantaged peers may already enjoy.

The October broadcast of Education New Parents Can Use will explore how supplemental services can help give students an equal chance at academic success and will look at particular schools systems that have successfully put these services in place. The program will also showcase efforts from around the country where parents, schools and communities have joined forces to ensure all students—regardless of economic or racial or ethnic background—are successful in school. The program will address questions such as:

  • What are supplemental services? How can parents find out if their child qualifies for the services, free of charge?
  • What can be done outside the classroom to help students improve academically?
  • What should parents do if they suspect their child needs additional help with schoolwork or homework? Where can parents go to find that help?
  • What types of activities can parents do at home to help their child to succeed in school?
  • What resources are available through the Department of Education to help students learn?
