The Challenge is a publication of OSDFS and a principal vehicle by which OSDFS communicates with the field, and provides information on research-based activities, best practices, and other information related to effective drug abuse and violence prevention strategies. Key recipients of the newsletter include state and local education agencies, OSDFS discretionary grantees, prevention specialists, and public and private organizations involved with safe and drug-free schools programs. This grant was awarded in FY 2005.

The project's goals are to choose topics that highlight the best of what works in drug abuse and violence prevention; develop consistent features for the newsletter's content, publish a quarterly newsletter with considerable input from OSDFS on all aspects of work; maintain an accessible Web site that includes past and present newsletters in English and Spanish; seek feedback from readers using a consistent invitation for comments, questions, and letters to the editor; and maintain the current database of subscribers.
