Top story: A US Airways Airbus 320 crashed into the Hudson River across fcrom midtown Manhattan Thursday afternoon, sending passengers fleeing for safety in frigid waters. Flight 1549 had just taken off from LaGuardia Airport enroute to Charlotte, N.C. and may have been struck by birds. Stocks closed higher as the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 12 points to 8,212 while the Nasdaq Composite rebounded 22 points and the S&P 500 edged up a single point.
