Residential Natural Gas Prices: What Consumers Should Know
This updated brochure provides a brief discussion of where natural gas for residential consumption comes from and the costs that make up residential prices. The factors behind recent and expected price movements are discussed, followed by EIA’s estimates for expected expenditures on natural gas by residential customers. The brochure ends with some suggestions for consumers to mitigate the impact of natural gas bills this winter. Categories: Prices, Consumption (Released, 12/24/2008, HTML and PDF formats)

Natural Gas in the Rocky Mountains: Developing Infrastructure
This Supplement to EIA’s Short-Term Energy Outlook analyzes current natural gas production, pipeline and storage infrastructure in the Rocky Mountains, as well as prospective pipeline projects in these States. The influence of these factors on regional prices and price volatility is examined. Categories: Prices, Pipelines, (Released, 9/11/2007, html format)
An Analysis of Price Volatility in Natural Gas Markets
This article presents an analysis of price volatility in the spot natural gas market, with particular emphasis on the Henry Hub in Louisiana. The purpose is to address whether natural gas prices have been more volatile in recent years and identify potential market factors that may contribute to price volatility. In addition to a first-order autoregressive error model, several graphical and statistical tools are used to examine trends and determine influencing factors. Although there is no demonstrated long-term trend in volatility, there are seasonal patterns and volatility is correlated strongly with storage dynamics. Impact of Higher Natural Gas Prices on Local Distribution Companies and Residential Customers
This report examines some of the problems faced by natural gas consumers as a result of increasing heating bills in recent years and problems associated with larger amounts of uncollectible revenue and lower throughput for the local distribution companies (LDCs) supplying the natural gas. The report also discusses Federal, State, and utility assistance programs for consumers, and focuses on various innovative rate mechanisms used by LDCs, along with the use of physical and financial hedging as a risk-mitigating strategy. Lastly, the report analyzes the risk of LDCs and how the risk has changed since regulatory reform in the utility industry. Categories: Prices, Consumption (Released, 8/15/2007, pdf format)

The Relationship Between Crude Oil and Natural Gas Prices
This report examines the time series econometric relationship between the Henry Hub natural gas price and the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil price. Typically, this relationship has been approached using simple correlations and deterministic trends. When data have unit roots as in this case, such analysis is faulty and subject to spurious results. A cointegrating relationship relating Henry Hub prices to the WTI and trend capturing the relative demand and supply effects over the 1989-through-2005 period is found. The dynamics of the relationship suggest a 1-month temporary shock to the WTI of 20 percent has a 5-percent contemporaneous impact on natural gas prices, but is dissipated to 2 percent in 2 months. A permanent shock of 20 percent in the WTI leads to a 16 percent increase in the Henry Hub price 1 year out all else equal.
