Residential Natural Gas Prices: What Consumers Should Know
This updated brochure provides a brief discussion of where natural gas for residential consumption comes from and the costs that make up residential prices. The factors behind recent and expected price movements are discussed, followed by EIA’s estimates for expected expenditures on natural gas by residential customers. The brochure ends with some suggestions for consumers to mitigate the impact of natural gas bills this winter. Categories: Prices, Consumption (Released, 12/24/2008, HTML and PDF formats)
Estimates of Peak Underground Working Gas Storage Capacity in the United States
This special report provides national and regional updates to estimates for U.S. aggregate natural gas storage capacity as of mid-2008. The estimates for national and regional peak capacity are based on the repored maximum reported working gas volumes for individual active facilities from January 2003 through May 2008. Categories: Storage, Consumption (Released, 10/7/2008, pdf format)
Additions to Capacity on the U.S. Natural Gas Pipeline Network: 2007
This report examines new natural gas pipeline capacity added to the U.S. natural gas pipeline system during 2007 and the areas of the country where those additions were concentrated. In addition, it discusses and analyzes proposed natural gas pipeline projects that may be developed between 2008 and 2010 and the market factors supporting these initiatives. Categories: Import/Export & Pipelines, Consumption (Released, 7/17/2008, pdf format)
Global Gas Outlook
World natural gas consumption and production are expected to increase by more than 50 percent from 2005 through 2030. Asia is expected to become the world’s number one gas consumer, taking over that spot from North America, as China’s economy grows 6.4 percent annually. Non-OECD countries are expected to account for more than 70 percent of the world’s total growth in consumption and production of natural gas over the forecast period. A significant portion of the non-OECD production growth is expected to be in the form of export projects, particularly LNG projects. World LNG trade is projected to more than double by 2030, with the center of the trade moving away from northeast Asia toward an even Atlantic/Pacific basin split. Distribution of Natural Gas: The Final Step in the Transmission Process
This special report analyzes the role of local distribution companies (LDCs) and transmission pipelines in delivering natural gas supplies to end-use customers, focusing upon the years 1996 through 2006. It also examines the changing dynamics of natural gas end-use markets, especially the trend toward large-volume users such as electric power generation plants and large industrial users receiving greater portions of their supplies from mainline natural gas transmission pipeline companies rather than the traditional LDC. What are natural gas customer choice programs?
Customer choice programs let households and small commercial establishments purchase natural gas from someone other than their traditional utility company. However, utility companies still deliver the natural gas to consumers. Categories: Consumption (Released, 6/17/2008)

Impact of Higher Natural Gas Prices on Local Distribution Companies and Residential Customers
This report examines some of the problems faced by natural gas consumers as a result of increasing heating bills in recent years and problems associated with larger amounts of uncollectible revenue and lower throughput for the local distribution companies (LDCs) supplying the natural gas. The report also discusses Federal, State, and utility assistance programs for consumers, and focuses on various innovative rate mechanisms used by LDCs, along with the use of physical and financial hedging as a risk-mitigating strategy. Lastly, the report analyzes the risk of LDCs and how the risk has changed since regulatory reform in the utility industry. Categories: Prices, Consumption (Released, 8/15/2007, pdf format)
