Our Global Community

With its energy operations expanding throughout the world, Marathon's international investments play an increasingly important role for the Company. Marathon is actively engaged in dialogue and partnership with a broad range of industry organizations, government ministries and agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and issue-based coalitions. Through its leadership, participation, engagement and financial support, Marathon consistently strives to live its values within the international community.

  • Marathon supports the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), which encourages governments, extractive companies, international organizations, NGOs and others to work together to develop a framework to promote transparency of payments and revenues via aggregated reporting.

  • The Company promotes the goals and principles of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights through participation in the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights. This international initiative guides extractive and energy companies in maintaining the safety and security of their operations globally within an operating framework that ensures respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

  • Marathon is a partner in the Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership, which includes a voluntary standard aimed at the elimination of venting and flaring of associated gas.

  • The Refining Divisions in Ohio, Louisiana, Minnesota and Texas have been awarded EPA's Energy STAR for being in the top quartile for energy efficiency of U.S. petroleum refineries.

  • The Company is a charter member of both the U.S. and International Natural Gas STAR programs, committed to reducing methane emissions from production operations. During Marathon's tenure in the U.S. program (from 1994), the Company has eliminated a cumulative 46 billion cubic feet of methane emissions earning the Production Partner of the Year Award in 1997 and again in 2006.
