January 16, 2009 November 2008 Passenger Airline Employment Down 6.5 Percent from November 2007
U.S. scheduled passenger airlines employed 6.5 percent fewer workers in November 2008 than in November 2007, the fifth consecutive decrease in full-time equivalent employee (FTE) levels for the scheduled passenger carriers from the same month of the previous year and the largest year-to-year decrease since November 2005, the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported today. The November FTE total of 392,185 for the scheduled passenger carriers was the lowest total since 1993. FTE calculations count two part-time employees as one full-time employee.

The number of scheduled domestic and international passengers on U.S. airlines during October 2008 declined by 7.1 percent from October 2007, dropping by 4.6 million to 59.6 million, in the 8th consecutive monthly decline from the same month of the previous year, the Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) today reported. The October system passenger number was the lowest October number since 2003.

Trade using surface transportation between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners Canada and Mexico was 2.1 percent lower in October 2008 than in October 2007, reaching $72.7 billion, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
